This position is based in Wilmington, NC with the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust. The mission of the Coastal Land Trust is to enrich the coastal communities of our state through conservation of natural areas and working landscapes, education, and the promotion of good land stewardship.

Purpose of the Position

The AmeriCorps member will assist the Director of Stewardship and Community Conservation in implementing and expanding the environmental education programs and curricula at the four of the NC Coastal Land Trust's preserves: Piney Ridge Nature Preserve, Everett Creek Nature Preserve, Gales Creek Nature Preserve, and BW Wells Nature Preserve.

The Coordinator will assist staff in writing and editing environmental education materials as well as leading and assisting classroom and field lessons based on NCCLTs curricula. The Coordinator will identify underserved schools in areas near the preserves and recruit and support teachers, school administrators, volunteers and others to become involved in environmental education programs in elementary and middles schools in New Hanover, Onslow, Carteret, and Pender counties. The Coordinator will recruit volunteers and expand the trails at select preserves. The Coordinator will manage volunteers for environmental education and outreach. The Coordinator will also assist NCCLT staff in a variety of other activities related to land stewardship, conservation outreach, and special events.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and lead environmental education programs at 4 NCCLT preserves using established curricula
  • Research and identify underserved schools in 4 county service area and expand into 3 of those schools
  • Identify, recruit and support additional teachers at underserved schools and volunteers to be included in program
  • Recruit and mange volunteers for environmental education and outreach
  • Expand trail system at two preserves with use of volunteers

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelors degree - preferrably in education or botany, ecology, biology, environmental sciences, natural resources management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good physical condition, including ability to work in the field in varying field conditions as required for site inspections, field trips, and other assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; Must have a legal driver’s license and consent to a criminal history check
  • Demonstrated computer abilities in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; webpage and social media background a plus

Essential Functions / Physical Demands

  • Willingness and ability to work outside in hot climate in all seasons and exposure to insects, animals, and other conditions incident to field work in forests, fields, and wetlands. Comfortable working with groups of children.
  • Good physical condition, including ability to work in the field in varying field conditions as required for site inspections, field trips, and other assignments

Preferred Schedule

Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm, and the position will require some long days and irregular business hours when in the field as well as some weekends.
