Hub Farm Outreach and Education AmeriCorps Coordinator
This position is based at the Durham Public Schools Hub Farm in Durham, NC. The mission of the Hub Farm is to engage students in all aspects of local food production and land stewardship to foster healthy living, career exploration, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Purpose of the position
The purpose of the position is to build our capacity for outreach and programming so that more students are served through the DPS Hub Farm. The member will assist in the day-to-day administrative and operational tasks of the Hub Farm. The member will be tasked with building upon the foundation built by our previous AmeriCorps members and continue to build a strong volunteer network and develop programming for DPS students.
- Work directly with teachers, administrators, partners, volunteers and Hub Farm staff to assist in coordinating field trips for Durham Public School students.
- Work directly with students, volunteers, teachers, and Hub Farm staff in the operational needs of the Hub Farm, including growing sustainable vegetables, caring for chickens, managing farm interns, volunteers, students, and community groups that frequent the farm for educational days.
- Design a Hub Farm Educator Cer
- Assist in writing and distributing a monthly newsletter to Hub Farm stakeholders and creating promotional materials as necessary for Hub Farm events and documenting Hub Farm activities.
- Assist in the research, documentation and collection of Hub Farm curriculum
- Passion for education, outdoor environments, and food system work that serves a diverse community
- Well organized, great verbal and written communication skills
- Familiar with gardening, farming and outdoor education
- Enjoy being a hands-on team player with Hub Farm staff, volunteers, interns and students
- Detail oriented towards records management, financial accountability and interest in following organic and GAP standards
- Basic equipment operation
- Ability to follow common safety and health standards when working with fresh produce and students
- Demonstrated computer abilities in Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint; webpage and social media background a plus
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively, creatively and effectively with people of all ethnic, socio-economic, and cultural background
Must be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; Must have a legal driver’s license and consent to a criminal history check
Essential Functions/physical demands
The AmeriCorps member will be expected to communicate regularly and clearly with Hub Farm staff, teachers, students, and community partners. Strong written and interpersonal skills with respect to all age and socio-economic backgrounds are expected. The member will be participating in regular outdoor activities including gardening and some construction. Some heavy lifting may be required and the ability to use basic hand tools and some equipment will be needed. The member should have basic computer skills and be able to learn marketing and outreach skills necessary for program marketing.
Preferred availability is Monday – Saturday between 7:30 am and 6pm. Average hours a week between 40-42 hours within this schedule.
